Here is the clip of her interview on WEEI the day she is about to sing the National Anthem. It is a must listen to. As you watch the National Anthem you might wonder why she is wearing sunglasses. The cancer in her eye is so painful it has shut one eye. Try singing the National Anthem when you are in that much pain. Try it in front of 35,000 people.
After singing the National Anthem, Sarah gets one night of sleep then enters the hospital for very painful and very long hospital treatments of Chemo, etc. She is still there.
How did Sarah get to sing the National Anthem for the Boston Red Sox? Sarah was receiving treatment at the Children's Hospital in Boston. As usual, she was entertaining Young children who have cancer when someone associated with the “Jimmy Fund”, heard her sing and went to find out who exactly was this girl! When he figured it out, he approached Sarah and asked her to sing the national anthem at the Red Sox game!
At her father, I have watched Sarah for over nine years going to the children's hospital in Colorado, and before each trip, which sometimes has lasted a week or a day, I have watched her bake loaves of bread hundreds and/or 100s of cookies etc. etc. She does this for the nurses, for the doctors, for the patients, no matter how much pain she's in, to bring the Light to the people at the Children's Hospital. If you ever walked into a Children's Hospital, like I have many times, you are often overcome by the amount of pain you see. Little kids with no hair, mothers stuggling to get their kids to the right place: Sarah has a children's cancer and it is very rare to present itself to anyone over the age of 1 1/2. In this case, in Boston, because she has a full-time job after graduating from graduate school at Boston University, she was not able to make anything but was able to sing. So she sang.
God gave her this great gift and what a blessing, as she's been a lifelong Red Sox fan, to be able to sing in front of the crowd last week.
Here is my Shorter version of Sarah singing!
Even the Pirates? love Sarah!
Many people have helped keep Sarah going, Especially her brave mom, Kelly, who sits with her in the hospital right now, rubbing her feet and keeping The great Doctors correctly informed. If you think you can survive cancer by yourself, you are wrong. You need a team of people! Here on the left is Dr. Larry Kotlikoff, a major member of the team, always helping Sarah!!
Another major member of the team is my oldest son, Pedro, (Although he was Christened Peter, I call him Pedro, I have no idea why!). He, (and his mom too!) have been instrumental over the last month of keeping Sarah going in the right direction!! He is the greatest and we are so proud of him!
I help Sarah hold up the most recent World Series Trophy won by the Red Sox! But more importantly, on the left, the young lady there is Diane Hollingworth, and she has kept Sarah alive, literally, and we are deeply indebted to her and her family. We love her and her even younger daughter on the right, who bravely also is fighting every day— we love and pray for Courtney!
The gang of friends who have always loved and cared for Sarah, show up for the game. Here are some of my dearest friends!!—Jimmy, Frank and Joe!
The Next morning Sarah and Mom head into the hospital for the weeklong treatment where Mom will never leave her side. My beautiful wife, Kelly, has sat in Children’s Hospitals from Denver to Philly, (CHOP) to now Boston personally taking care of Sarah and keeping a close eye on her treatments. There is Sarah, Smiling as she is about to undergo extreme pain and hallucinations, but that is Sarah Grace Laffey! Here we go!
